Gates Avenue

Gates Avenue

Historically sensitive selective renovation & restoration, published by Dwell, House Beautiful, Brownstoner, 6sqft.

A Clinton Hill Italianate row house dating back to the 1860s,  within a designated landmark district, bore witness to numerous impromptu renovations throughout the years. These alterations resulted in a warren of small dark rooms, the removal of the stoop, and the replacement of the original staircase with a central hall. Despite these changes, many of the original details endured, albeit having suffered neglect for decades.

The clients were keen on restoring and preserving the historic charm of the residence. Urban Pioneering Architecture undertook a meticulous renovation and restoration, carefully considering both the budget and the reuse of materials. Custom modern cabinetry is juxtaposed against the existing architectural framework, while reconstructed panelling and moulding blend new partitions seamlessly into the interior as if they were original. The renovation included a faithful recreation of the original stoop, along with the establishment of a garden-level apartment and a triplex featuring a contemporary guest suite. The result seamlessly blends historical elements with modern comfort, creating a space that is both stylish and in harmony with its rich past.
